Collection
Although I grow a fair amount of miscellaneous plants, I am currently trying to be a little more disciplined in my interests, rather than growing things simply because they take my fancy. My main interests are
- Dwarf opuntioideae, particularly Cumulopuntia and Maihueniopsis
- Dwarf Mexican cacti, particularly Turbinicarpus and Ariocarpus
- Mesembs, chiefly Conophytum and Lithops
- Haworthia and Gasteria
I keep an assortment of Echinocereus and Coryphantha in a well-ventilated cold frame, and a selection of hardier opuntioideae live outdoors all year round. I shall be constructing a raised bed (to contain little more than grit and rubble for drainage) during 2009.
My last attempt at keeping my collection documented failed completely. I’ve taken the view - especially with masses of seed-raising - that it simply doesn’t make sense to try and document the lot. I will, though, try and make sense of my burgeoning collection of opuntioideae when the opportunity arises.
