I have an Easter cactus, with the vivid crimson flowers, and it is almost 25 years old, I have just taken a cutting from it in 2009, and they will both outlive me!!

Hello Marion - only E. obesa. It was very straightforward from seed. I gave it standard cactus treatment and had no problems at all.

Hello Marion, thanks for leaving a comment. If you want material from a specialist grower, you might try the EPRIC website. They’re in the Netherlands and do mail order to the UK. They’re not the cheapest, and often sell plants as unrooted cuttings, but I’ve had good plants from them in the past. It’s worth keeping an eye on the website as their stock does change a fair bit.

The growing medium for those is at a guess something like 40% John Innes no. 2, 30% coarse grit, 30% Tesco’s Premium lightweight cat litter. For more recent batches of seedlings I’ve switched to something more like 50% JI2, 50% cat litter and not bothered with grit.

Stuart, you are doing quite well with the ariocarpus. A few years ago I tried with some seeds, and failed. But I have some new seeds from the seed list, and will have another go. What kind of soil mixture do you use? winston
