Are these the same?

Posted by Stuart under: Cacti .

I’m becoming more and more convinced that the plant I have labelled as Selenicereus pteranthus is in fact the same thing as the one I have labelled as Selenicereus spinulosus. The "pteranthus" has proved to be self-fertile, with almost identical flowers, and it looks as though even the fruits are identical.

On the left, Selenicereus spinulosus, with a fruit from last year, and on the right, S. "pteranthus".

Hello again,

naming Selenicereus is a difficult task, the genus is poorly understood and there can be alot of variation even in one plant, i can however tell you that both your plants are neither S.pteranthus nor S.spinulosus. The latter is a very short spined plant with 4-6 ribs and a (small) distinct flower. If you can post a picture of the flower of both plants it could help in identifying them.

Good luck

Well they’re clearly very poorly understood by me! I’ll have to email the various people I’ve given cuttings to and let them know that they’re misidentified.

I don’t currently have photos of either in flower - I missed the plant on the right, but it has another couple of flowers to come; the one on the left hasn’t obliged yet but is in bud, but it’ll be a couple of weeks before the buds are mature.
