Today’s flowers
Posted by Stuart under: Cacti .
There haven’t been an enormous number of flowers today, but the plants that have obliged have certainly put on a good show. Here’s Mammillaria zeilmanniana having a go in this afternoon’s sunshine. This plant has been in my care for about five years, in which time it’s gone from living in a 3 1/2″ pot to a 12″ bowl.

Also having a go have been Strombocactus disciformis, and Melocactus sp.; it’s the first time this Strombocactus has flowered for me, and I wasn’t expecting it to open so soon as the bud didn’t look ready yesterday, but the sun certainly brought it out. There’s something rather endearing about Melocactus flowers - they’re almost apologetic in the way they peek out of the cephalial wool!

That is a great Mammillaria zeilmanniana specimen. I hope mine is this big in a couple more years. It has a long way to go. Do you fertilize often?
I don’t have any cacti in the Strombocactus genus–and don’t know anything about it. I’ll need to do some more reading.

Thanks Aiyana. I give dilute feed a few times a year. It has been repotted regularly though.
Strombocactus are very slow, but very attractive, I think.
