Baby mesemb update
Posted by Stuart under: Other Succulents; Propagation .
I thought it about time I posted about my mesembs - as I’ve mentioned previously this is the first time I’ve tried growing any of them from seed, and I’m encouraged by their progress so far.
Top row, left to right:
Conophytum limpidum “Bright Eyes” - from Mesemb Study Group seed. This is a cultivar named by Steven Hammer, which is racing ahead of all the other conos I’ve sown. As with all the others, I initially tried to germinate them with too much warmth; when transferred to a relatively cool windowsill, germination was much better.
Ectotropis alpina - a 2″ pot filling up rapidly! Most of these seedlings are now beginning to show their third pair of leaves.
Lithops julii ssp fulleri - growing at a reasonable rate. The cono seedlings sown at the same time as these are but a fraction of their size.
Bottom row:
Pleiospilos mixture - from seed bought from Doug and Vivi Rowland. Now that the true leaves are developing, growth has noticeably accelerated. Germination with these was slow, but again I put this down to excessive warmth. An initial handful of seedlings were joined by all those shown here when again they were shifted to a cooler windowsill.
Titanopsis fulleri - again growing strongly now that the true leaves are developing. The bottom-left plant is just starting on its second leaf-pair.
