Yesterday’s flower highlights
Posted by Stuart under: Cacti .
Yesterday brought some sunshine with it, and several of my favourite miniatures put on a really nice display.
From left to right:
Turbinicarpus valdezianus – a plant from the Atomic Nursery in Germany, which has turned out to be the white-flowered form.
Turbinicarpus schwarzii ‘rubriflorus’ - the second flower from this plant in 2008.
Turbinicarpus pseudopectinatus ‘rubriflorus’ – a flower that opened for only a couple of hours while the sun was highest in the sky, and was then closed by about 3pm.
Blossfeldia liliputana ‘subterranea’ – at last! The flower buds that have been brewing for the last few months are finally starting to open. They’re lovely delicate things, and remind me a little of Rhipsalis flowers.

Hi Stuart,
Nice Bossfeldia. Mine are in full bud at the moment waiting for a couple of sunny days. It will be the first time they have flowered for me. Do you get any seed?

Thanks Ant.
It’s already covered in little red berries! I didn’t see many of the flowers open but I believe they’re cleistogamous like Fraileas, and so can set seed without ever opening.
I sowed some of last year’s seed from this plant, but didn’t get any germination at all.
