Agave seedlings

Agave sp. 2008-02-10Not being much of a grower of leafy succulents, I’ve never tried any Agave from seed before. These were sown on the 1st of February as an experiment purely to use up some of the 2005-vintage seed from the BCSS forum seed pool.

They do seem to grow at an alarming rate. Germination was fairly quick, taking just five days, and as you can see, five days later there’s about an inch of growth on the largest seedling.

Crikey.

I haven’t given these any special treatment compared with other seedlings; I’ve altered my compost to use a fairly high proportion of Tesco’s premium lightweight cat litter, both in the main mixture itself and as top dressing, but I suspect these would have rocketed away anyway, and that Tesco’s can’t really be thanked for their growth rate!
