Seedling update - Gasterias and Epiphyllums

Posted by Stuart under: Cacti; Other Succulents; Propagation .

The seeds I’ve sown under lights are suddenly coming up all over the place.

Gasteria Pulchra 2008 01 13I wasn’t certain that there would be any signs of life from the various pots of Gasteria seed I put in, as long after some of the quicker-germinating species had sprouted the Gasteria pots were displaying no evidence of life at all.

But here they are; one day they weren’t there, the next day they were shapeless white blobs. The day after that, they had started producing their first leaves. These are Gasteria pulchra.

Although I’ve grown cacti from seed many times, more or less successfully (often less), I’ve never grown leaf  succulents, so this is entirely new to me.

Epiphyllum anguliger 2008 01 13Also new to me is the experience of growing Epiphyllums from seed. Normally one doesn’t really bother, as they’re so easy to propagate from cuttings, but I thought it would be interesting to raise a species Epiphyllum, rather than a hybrid, from seed.

These seedlings are from Koehres, and are of Epiphyllum anguliger. They were sown on December the 22nd last year, and have been germinating gradually for the last week or so.
