Turnip time

Dioscorea elephantipesI obtained this plant of Dioscorea elephantipes (or Testudinaria elephantipes if you prefer) – the “Elephant’s foot” plant – from the Atomic Plant Nursery in Germany, an excellent and inexpensive source for these plants if you compare their prices to the often ridiculous prices Dioscoreas seem to fetch on eBay. I have two of them; the one shown here has produced the more vigorous growth this year.

D. elephantipes is a member of the yam family and is a winter grower; my plants came into growth at the end of September. The caudices on both plants are about 2″ across, and are just starting to develop the characteristic splits in the “wood”.
